The origins of the bassoon are unkown but it can be traced to the phagotus that Afranio of Ferrara built in the early 16th century. Its name is derived from its resemblance to a bundle of sticks. The Bassoon was a favorite instrument to compose for by Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Mozart. The Heckel family of Germany were one the first Bassoons makers in the early part of the 19th century. They are still considered one of the finest Bassoons made. Made by the Heckel
