Hart 7th-grader Neethi Bangalore made a strong showing at the annual California State Junior High Spelling Bee, but competition proved to be too fierce for Neethi to walk away with a state title.
The contest, held May 10 in San Rafael, drew 57 of the best spellers from across the state. Students in grades seven, eight and nine represented 30 counties at the competition. The state title went to a student from Santa Barbara County.
This is Neethi's second year in a row to advance to the state level, though last year she competed at the elementary level since sixth-graders are included with that group. This was her first year to compete at the junior high level.
Neethi managed to stay in the competition for an amazing 3-1/2 hours before being bumped. She tied for 11th place with a student from Santa Barbara County. There were still 12 kids competing when Neethi's long run came to an end. (There were two more ties.)
Congratulations to Neethi for representing Hart and Alameda County so well at the state spelling bee!
